Asset Airs on JTS.TV

January 15, 2014

Asset
is a spy-action, Toronto web series launching today only on JTS.TV. JTS.TV (Just The Story) is a subscription-based streaming website featuring thousands of web series. Don’t have a JTS.TV subscription just yet? Viewers can still watch the pilot episode of Asset for free.

Back in August, The Press Pass first published an exclusive interview with creator and star Matthew Carvery. On June 27, 2013 the series had their official green light from the Independent Production Fund. The IPF is the holy grail of web series funding in Canada, known for funding successful web series such as Ruby Skye P.I., Space Janitors, and Versus Valerie.

The premise of Asset follows Eric Blair, a Canadian civilian, who gets recruited by the C.I.A. to take on a Russian arms dealer. Civilian is the key word here, because instead of your typical spy/action/thriller Blair doesn’t know the first thing about espionage.

The pilot is quick to introduce us to the story’s villain, Valentin Lazerev in a bloody opening scene. Immediately we jump to our main character arriving in Prague. The production value shows through here with the Asset team filming on location. The episode introduces us to most of the main characters: Eric the not-spy, Julia the analyst, and Lazerev. Here the significant character development is the dynamic between Julia and Eric. But the point of the pilot is to intrigue the viewer; because in the end the viewer only knows CIA is after Lazerev.

Episode 2 explains all the questions posed in the pilot. Who is Lazerev? Why is the CIA after him? Why pose civilian Eric Blair as an undercover operative? Here we get all of Julia’s backstory, and how she ended up on assignment Prague. Here we get her whole lead up to Prague in terms of flashback. With this, we shift between Eric’s and Julia’s point of view. Episode 2 does an excellent job at setting up the audience for the rest of the show.

Viewers can keep up with Asset’s release and promos by liking their Facebook Page and following them on Twitter.
