Review of Asset: Episode 15
August 13, 2014

Episode 15, the last one of the season, is an apt conclusion to the series. The episodes leading up to this one seemed to start new storylines, and that’s generally bad when you’re so close to the end of a season. But here what really worked great in this finale was Valentine Lazerev, who up until this point, had been only referenced to throughout the series.
The scene in which Lazerev and Eric have somewhat of a showdown is when we see Michael Chwastiak show off his skills. The man proves himself as terrifying and powerful as all of the other characters always said. It’s a pity Chwiastiak has only been alluded to, and not shown off more in previous episodes. On a side note, Chwiastiak actually plays a large role in another IPF-approved upcoming series called Bait [hyperlink].

The death of Valentine, which was a long time coming, seemed a bit predictable. The plot twists with Dimitri manipulating Eric and Nadja worked really well. It adds something to the plot that tied up Nadja’s storyline, but I still wonder what happened to her now she’s a widow.
After that the this-season-is-ending montage did its job of telling us exactly what happened to our characters. This includes Tom, but excludes Katyenka. The truth is after so much teeth-pulling, dragging-our-feet missions upon missions on trying to take down Valentine Lazerev – he’s just replaced with Dimitri. Dimitri, another angry Russian who will do just as much damage as Lazerev. This is possibly a vague social commentary on how CIA assassination operations don’t do any good. Or that could just be me thinking that.
Either way, there’s not a lot said about what happens to Eric Blair. It’s left rather open-ended, and most of the time I’d be a fan of that. This is not one of those times. Does he go back to Canada? Does he go on the run? Does he join Julia at the CIA? That last one I highly doubt, but the last one makes sense as we see Eric leave the airport with Julia.
Overall the last episode was rather satisfactory, of course it leaves me needing more plot. I think this choice was made in hopes for making another season, but doesn’t work for the season standing alone.
