Book of Rules: Episode 2

June 26, 2014
Picture
House rules are something that everyone can relate to. Sometimes it’s accommodating a pet peeve like don’t leave banana peels on the counter, and other times it’s about considering everyone in the house like replacing the milk if you finish it off. It can even be a comfort thing, like don’t walk around in your boxers please and thank you.

Episode 2 tells us that the Book of Rules isn’t all about ridiculous drunken college nights, but also includes the bothersome things covered above. Maybe the Book of Rules has practical uses after all.

Since this show covers a rather general experience, and therefore reaches a more general audience its strength is not in the story. The web series helps set itself apart by implementing aesthetically pleasing filmmaking styles. The morning routine and the continuous take in the kitchen help up the production value.

Book of Rules also has a well-executed soundtrack. Anything with proper sound design, used for both comedic effect and mood, gets a big gold star from me.

The episode has some great moments with Mike overstepping his boundaries. The amount of times I’ve told the boyfriend to get out of the bathroom! What’s up with dudes and their personal grooming? It’s not just the ladies. But seriously, nothing worse than having to wait for a roommie to get out of the bathroom.

The Book of Rules also becomes Mike’s study guide, and it’s funny how much some of the later scenes remind you of University. Although the show doesn’t explicitly say these dudebros are college students, but the show often eludes to college problems. The test that Mike has to pass is an example of one of these.

Mike fails to meet Eric and Graham’s expectations once again, albeit a little realistic, and must somehow make up for it. The bar is now raised. Good luck Mike.
