Nikki Benz for Mayor Review

Explaining Things to my Grandfather is a Toronto-based web series about real life grandfather and grandson, Joe and Ethan Cole respectively, talking about life lessons. This comedy touches on several subjects important to Ethan: cockblocking, sexting, being a wingman, and of course winning back the ex. This is course gives you a pretty good idea of the Ethan running joke.
But as Toronto recently went through a run for mayor featuring both Rob and Doug Ford, Toronto’s most embarrassing political candidates. With any rich white man jumping on the ‘run for mayor’ bandwagon you would think it can’t get any better.
But this web series decides to also jump on the bandwagon, just to let us know how face-palming Toronto politics is. Explaining Things to my Grandfather gives us 2014 Toronto Mayor candidate Nikki Benz.
Of course the episode contains any number of porn star jokes, but of course we still have grandmother Lil Cole balancing out the male-oriented laughs. The format of the video is its biggest strength, giving viewers a simple breakdown on how to run for mayor. The highlight is the last section, which employs Miss Benz’ camera skills and charisma.
Also there’s that The Big Lebowski (1998) reference. Watch for it.
The episode is enjoyable to watch, perfect for those who love some rip on Toronto politics and the subtle (and not subtle) humor of having a porn star interact with these characters. The quality here is good. If only the jump cuts could be edited out, as the change in angles and scenes make them seem obsolete.
I’ll be interested to see what the Cole family does next. I’ll also be excited to see more humiliation for poor Ethan, oh Joe and Lil know how to embarrass him.
