Episode 3 Review

September 18, 2014
Picture
Episode 3 finally reveals what this ‘tool of great destruction’ that’s been baffling us for two episodes. Doctor Mascalzone just hasn’t shut up about this thing, and it didn’t disappoint. One thing about Mascalzone’s evil lair is loaded with some cool tech; note the great graphic touch screen the Doctor uses for all of his evil deeds.

This weapon has always thought to be some bomb, which would be rather unoriginal, but (wait for it) it’s a talking clock. Now I hate to spoil it for those who haven’t seen the episode, but I gotta talk about this.

This talking box, has the personality of a womanizing Italian man from New York City. Think Joey Tribbiani’s dad with a thicker accent. Captain Freelance tries to take control of this situation of course, and now it becomes clear what his role is. Captain Freelance alludes to your every day superhero that claims to save the day and can tell you what you already know. You can’t pay rent, but low and behold you can jump into an impending explosion! Don’t you love a guy you can state the obvious? “It’s a ticking time bomb!”

One other thing that really worked for this episode is the further use of action bubbles. Action bubbles for everything. Meanwhile… action bubbles are taking over the world!

Either way Hildy, Brunhilda, really gets a chance to show off her skills here. She upstages all the other actors and helps push the story forward. It’s important to note, that a man would more often than not play Hildy’s character. Thank you to the creators for not filling it with another straight white male. Hildy really takes advantage of building her own storyline and making the character her own.

With this in mind I feel like Gillian isn’t being utilized to her full capabilities. She’s got some great one-liners, especially with dealing with the ridiculousness around her, but she hasn’t gotten a chance to shine just yet. That is usually the case with these ‘straight man’ (in this case straight woman) characters, where half of their job is reacting to when shit hits the fan. Meaning, that shit hits the fan every few minutes. I’d love to see this girl take charge of a scene and make it her own. Also excited to see how she’ll deal with talking clock guy.
