Episode 1 Review
September 3, 2014

Generic Girl is a comic book style web series featuring a beautiful blonde, and her incredibly financially irresponsible roommate. Gillian and Pete, respectively, have a great dynamic. Pete is your typical over dramatic, comedic sidekick.
We don’t know too much about Gillian as of yet, only that she knows how to handle pretty much whatever is thrown at her. Even if it’s a string of bad pick up lines from a creepy dude.
The first episode is short, and mostly features our villain Doctor Mascalzone. The evil doctor has a fantastic lab, and does not waste a minute of his screen time. The director does a good job of showing of his evil lair, and that makes increases the stylized feel of the comic book theme.
The show establishes itself as a comedy not unlike Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, but only it doesn’t reference video games. Bang! Knock. The same visual nuggets appear on the screen in classic comic book action bubbles. Coupled with the cheezy male narration and jazzy soundtrack, the show has a solid 1950’s/60’s feel. Boom! The web series is also reminiscent of Batman (1966) in bright colours, only Generic Girl is witty and knows how to make fun of itself.
Episode itself feels a little too short, but it’s just over five minutes. This might be due to having our heroes introduced so late in the episode. We don’t get to know our main character Gillian nearly enough before we’re left on a cliffhanger.
Another reason why the episode feels too short is the intro montage at the beginning, I could have done without it. I get why it’s there and it’s a great sequence, but it’s in dire need on context.
Overall the first episode of Generic Girl does a great job at establishing a visually appealing show with strong characters. Looking forward to more comic book nerdiness.
