Episode 3

This episode does a lovely job of introducing our new character. Gwen presents herself as a frequent flyer, and along with her outfit and demeanor you can tell she’s the business type.
Now that’s a big surprise. Everyone else in Sera’s social circle seem to have artsy professions, but shockingly Gwen is a divorce lawyer. The opposites attract theme has taken a new level, as this divorce lawyer has strong opinions on marriage and how it’s not needed. It’s ironic on Gwen’s part, as she needs married couples for her business to thrive. Nothing like seeing so many relationships run cold to have you lose faith in the romance and strength of marriage.

Sera and Gwen have a fantastic and complicated dynamic. It’s clear that everything Sera said about Gwen in the previous episode is true: she’s family, she’s her best friend, and she was a great love. Gwen thinks she can pry because of these things, mostly playing the best friend card. They know each other very well, and it’s clear they have unresolved issues concerning their relationship.
Sera mentions about how she met her new friend (meaning Ona) at Jeri and Casey’s engagement party. Then Gwen goes on a rant on how marriage is a social construction, clearly this woman is well educated, and this brings up an obviously long-rooted disagreement. This is probably why the two broke up in the first place. Back in Episode 1, this was brushed aside with Ona and Laura. Clearly the two of them disagree on the marriage subject as well, but of course neither of them wanted to get into an argument about it at a social function. This is possibly something that will drive a wedge between them later on.
Going back to Sera, Gwen keeps trying to get Sera to talk more about Ona. It’s clear to Gwen that Sera has feelings beyond friendship, and Gwen is probably prying because she sees Ona as competition. Sera, still insisting that it’s just a friendship, gets fed up and pulls a cheap punch at Gwen. Sera says, “And she’s with someone! I’m not like you Gwen, that kind of thing means something to me.” Despite Gwen’s ulterior motives, that was a harsh one. There’s probably a story behind that, and I’m hoping we’ll hear a backstory to it later on.
Gwen glosses over it, and tries to console Sera by saying that Ona might not be happy with whoever she’s with. Sera sticks to her virtues, saying that it’s not okay to try break up a couple. Sera gets more upset, so the two change the subject. The end of this scene says a lot about Sera and Gwen’s relationship, as we all know there’s no going back from a relationship with your best friend.
The next scene showcases Ona and Laura’s relationship. Their dynamic is different in comparison to Sera and Gwen, as there’s clearly a routine worked out between them. Laura seems to disregard quite a bit of what Ona says about Sera and her ex, and Laura’s even a little condescending at times. Maybe she’s not okay with Ona having lunch with Sera, as well as caring about her. Ona always seems to be apologizing, as if it’s dumb for her to be concerned about Sera.
After beating Ona down, Laura lightens the mood with, “I’m always right,” while only half-joking. The whole scene is rather subtle in comparison to Gwen and Sera, and there’s clearly a negative power dynamic between Ona and Laura. Consequently, Gwen was right about the, ‘unhappily with someone.’
